The Value of R – Understanding Insulation:
“A well insulated home is the key to surviving hot, steamy days and frigid Canadian winters,” advises Mark Geres, Insulation Expert, Owens Corning. “Effective insulation helps to maintain a consistent temperature in your home by reducing the amount of heat transfer with the outdoor environment. How can you tell if your house needs an insulation upgrade? The first step is to understand ‘R-Value’.”
If you ask an insulation expert how much insulation your home should have, they will refer to the term ‘R-value’ to answer this question. R-value is the measure of resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater its insulating power. Attics should have a minimum of R-40 while basements should be insulated to a minimum of R-20. Owens Corning PINK Fiberglas® Insulation products are available in a range of R-values to meet the recommended standards based on the local climate.
Understanding R-Value is the first step in ensuring that your home is well insulated. If you’re planning on upgrading your home’s insulation, measure the size of the space you plan to insulate and bring these measurements to your local building materials supplier for assistance. The quantity of insulation you’ll need to buy depends on the size of space you need to insulate.
